When I was in the process of writing Identity, there were many artists that influenced my vocal style, my production style, and my lyrics. Here are some of those artists.
In my opinion Beyonce is easily one of the best live performers in the business right now. Her album Lemonade stretched my interests and opened to my eyes to artistic influences and possibilities that I didn't know were possible.
Frank Ocean's falsetto range is a source of great inspiration to me. In the music industry today there are not many extremely relevant male singers. Justin Timberlake, Sam Smith, John Legend, The Weeknd, there are none that really stand out as the best in the game. Frank Ocean's talent and artistic style is unmatched and Blonde was one of the two best albums of the year in my opinion - the other being Lemonade.
I didn't start listening to this band until after Identity was finished but when I did I realized just how similar my style is to their debut album If You Wait. The dense, heavy reverb and the dramatic vocals and subtle backgrounds are very similar.
The music of Adele is a universal language loved by most of the world. I am no different. She is the undisputed master of piano ballads.
Ariana is an extremely talented vocalist. While I believe that her music doesn't often reflect her talent as much as it should, I will never deny she is very vocally talented. Some of my instincts when I do runs often mimic or are very close to ones that she has done live.
These are just a few of the many artists that I look up to and that inspire me. Some of the others are James Blake, Tori Kelly, Aquilo, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, Jessie J, Nathan Sykes, and Emeli Sande.
